Captain's log, stardate 5693.2. The Enterprise is approaching the last
reported position of the star ship Defiant,
which vanished without trace three weeks ago. We are in unsurveyed
territory.
[Bridge]
(You could cut the tense atmosphere with a knife.)
SPOCK: Captain, we are registering very curious readings from all
sensors.
KIRK: Specify.
SPOCK: I cannot. According to our instruments, space itself is
literally breaking up. There is no known phenomenon which would account
for these readings.
KIRK: What about sensor failure?
SPOCK: Negative. I have run a complete check on all systems.
SCOTT: Captain. We're losing power in the warp engines.
KIRK: How bad is it?
SCOTT: We can barely read it, but I don't like the looks of it. And I
cannot find out the cause.
CHEKOV: Captain. Visual detection of an object dead ahead.
KIRK: How about it, Spock?
SPOCK: Fascinating.
KIRK: Explain.
SPOCK: There is virtually no sensor contact. No mass analysis. No trace
of radiation. We see it, but our sensors indicate it is not there.
(As they close in, the bright fuzzy thing on the screen becomes
recognizable.)
KIRK: The Defiant! Mister Sulu, impulse engines only. Close to
transporter range.
SULU: Aye, aye, sir.
KIRK: Lieutenant, open up a hailing frequency.
UHURA: I've been trying to raise them, sir. There is no response.
SULU: Just within transporter range, sir.
KIRK: Good. Maintain position. Mister Spock, Mister Chekov, come with
me. Doctor McCoy, report to the transporter room immediately. Scotty,
you have the conn.
SCOTT: Aye, sir.
[Transporter room]
(The landing party are wearing silvery space
suits.)
O'NEIL: Locked in on the Defiant Bridge, sir.
KIRK: Energise.
[Defiant Bridge]
(The crew are dead. One man is in the act of
strangling another.)
CHEKOV: Has there ever been a mutiny on a starship before?
SPOCK: Absolutely no record of such an occurrence, Ensign.
MCCOY: Jim. The Captain's neck is broken.
SPOCK: The ship is still functioning, Captain. It is logical to assume
the mutineers are somewhere aboard.
KIRK: Use the ship's sensors to locate them. Kirk to Enterprise.
SCOTT [OC]: Scott here, sir.
KIRK: Prepare to beam over a full security squad on my orders.
SCOTT [OC]: Aye, aye, Captain.
SPOCK: Captain, there is no sign of life aboard this vessel.
KIRK: Odd, Mister Spock. Very odd. Spock, you stay here with me.
Chekov, get down to Engineering and life support systems. Doctor McCoy,
check out the Sickbay. Kirk to Enterprise. Cancel the security squad
and stand by for further instructions.
[Bridge]
SCOTT: Aye, aye, Captain. Standing by.
SULU: I can't get an accurate fix on the Defiant, Mister Scott, but I
know it's drifting away from us. Shall I correct for range, sir?
SCOTT: Aye, I think you're right. Keep us within beaming range, but not
too close.
[Defiant Engineering]
(The crew in Engineering are dead, so is everyone
in Sickbay. The patients were strapped down onto the beds.)
CHEKOV: Captain.
KIRK [OC]: Report, Mister Chekov.
CHEKOV: Just like what I found in life support. All dead.
[Defiant Bridge]
KIRK: Get back up here.
(Chekov has a dizzy spell, and totters out of Engineering.)
KIRK: Kirk to McCoy.
[Defiant Sickbay]
MCCOY: McCoy here.
[Defiant Bridge]
KIRK: Bones, can you tell me what they all died of?
MCCOY [OC]: I'd say these people killed each other.
KIRK: They what?
[Defiant Sickbay]
MCCOY: You heard correctly, Jim. These people
killed each other.
[Defiant Bridge]
KIRK: Could mental disease have infected all of the
crew?
MCCOY [OC]: According to the ship's log, the medical surgeon down here
didn't even know what was going on.
[Defiant Sickbay]
MCCOY: The best I can do is get all the readings I
can get and analyse them later.
[Defiant Corridor]
(McCoy kneels beside a slightly fuzzy crewman lying
on the floor, and reaches out to touch him. His hand passes through the
body.)
MCCOY: What the devil?
KIRK [OC]: Bones, what is it?
[Defiant Doctor's office]
KIRK: Bones, what is it? Answer me!
(McCoy's hand passes through a PADD and a desk.)
[Defiant Bridge]
KIRK: Answer me!
[Defiant Doctor's office]
MCCOY: Jim, this ship is dissolving. My hand just
passed through a man
[Defiant Bridge]
MCCOY [OC]: And a table.
KIRK: Get up here on the double.
[Bridge]
(On the viewscreen, the fuzzy Defiant disappears
and reappears several times.)
SULU: Mister Scott, the Defiant. It's starting to disappear.
[Transporter room]
SCOTT [OC]: Bridge to transporter room.
O'NEIL: Transporter room, O'Neil here.
SCOTT [OC]: You got that transporter working yet, Mister?
O'NEIL: No, sir. Not yet.
[Bridge]
SCOTT: Take over, Mister Sulu. I'll be in the
transporter room.
SULU: Aye, aye, sir.
[Defiant Bridge]
SPOCK: Captain, the Defiant's sensors correspond
with an extremely high degree of correlation to those of the
Enterprise.
KIRK: You mean what happened to the Defiant might be happening to the
Enterprise?
SPOCK: Affirmative.
KIRK: Kirk to Enterprise. Mister Scott.
SCOTT [OC]: Scott here.
KIRK: Mister Scott, stand by to beam us back.
[Transporter room]
SCOTT: I can't, sir. At least, not all at once.
[Defiant Bridge]
KIRK: Why not? What's happened?
[Transporter room]
SCOTT: Everything. That ship you're in is fading
out, and it's ripping the innards out of this one.
[Defiant Bridge]
SCOTT [OC]: It's jamming our transporter
frequencies. I've only got three of them working, and I'm not sure of
those. One of you has got to wait.
KIRK: Chekov, McCoy, prepare for transportation. You, too, Spock.
SPOCK: Request permission to remain, Captain. I could be completing the
data.
KIRK: Request denied.
SPOCK: Captain, there is a chance
KIRK: I know what the chances are. Mister Spock, don't argue. Get back
with the information. I'll be right there. Scotty, energise
transporter.
[Transporter room]
SCOTT: Aye.
(It takes two goes and a lot of switch flicking to beam the three onto
the Enterprise.)
SPOCK: Energise.
(Nothing happens. Chekov switches on the wall monitor.)
CHEKOV: It's gone. The Defiant just vanished.
(Scott and O'Neil start fiddling with the innards of the transporter
console.)
SCOTT: Anything?
SPOCK: Negative.
SCOTT: That's it. I've done all I can. There's nothing out there to
grab a hold of and bring in. When that ship went, it must have taken
the Captain with it.
[Bridge]
COMPUTER: Computer working.
SPOCK: Compute the next period of spatial interphase.
COMPUTER: Next interphase two hours twelve minutes.
SCOTT: Two hours and twelve minutes? That power leak has unbalanced the
ship and she's starting to drift. I can't hold her in place that long.
SPOCK: We must try, Mister Scott. The fabric of space is very weak
here. If we disturb it, there will be no chance of retrieving the
Captain alive.
CHEKOV: I don't understand what's so special about this region of
space.
SPOCK: Well, picture it this way, Mister Chekov. We exist in a universe
which co-exists with a multitude of others in the same physical space.
At certain brief periods of time, an area of their space overlaps an
area of ours. That is a time of interphase, during which we can connect
with the Defiant's universe.
UHURA: Mister Spock? We will be able to retrieve the Captain at that
time, won't we?
SPOCK: Yes. However, the dimensional structure of each universe is
totally dissimilar. Any use of power disturbs it. If we are not
extremely careful, we shall lose the Captain and become trapped
ourselves.
UHURA: I see.
CHEKOV: And die like him?
(Chekov leaps up, pushes Spock away and, screaming, attacks Sulu. Scott
grabs him and McCoy arrives to help. Spock grabs his face.)
SPOCK: Chekov! Chekov!
(Spock neck-pinches him into silence.)
SPOCK: Security guards to the Bridge.
UHURA: Aye, sir.
MCCOY: What happened, Mister Spock?
SPOCK: I was attempting to explain to Mister Chekov the nature of our
problems in this situation when he attacked.
MCCOY: Did anyone notice anything peculiar in his behaviour before
this?
SULU: I think he had several spasms of pain.
MCCOY: Did he seem to be getting hysterical?
UHURA: Doctor, he seemed more angry than frightened.
SCOTT: He had no cause to be angry.
(Security arrive.)
MCCOY: Take Mister Chekov to Sickbay. Put him under restraint.
(Scott and the security guards leave with Chekov.)
SPOCK: Lieutenant Uhura is correct. There was murderous fury in Chekov.
The same fury which was evident in the Defiant.
MCCOY: That's what I was afraid of. Whatever it was that drove the crew
of the Defiant to murder each other could be communicable.
SPOCK: Is there anything you need to isolate the cause?
MCCOY: Time. By the way, Mister Spock, I think it might be a wise
precaution to put some distance between us and the Defiant.
SPOCK: If we are to recover the Captain, we must not move.
MCCOY: How long will that take?
SPOCK: Approximately two hours before the attempt can be made.
MCCOY: Spock, are you sure that Jim is still alive?
SPOCK: The Captain was caught in our transporter beam when the Defiant
phased out. It is possible he was spared the shock of transition and
survived. However, if we are to recover him, we must catch him at the
precise moment during the next interphase, or he will die. And there
can be no margin for error. His environmental unit can provide
breathable air for no more than three point six two hours.
SULU: Mister Spock. A vessel approaching on an intercept vector.
SPOCK: Status, Mister Sulu.
SULU: Range two hundred thousand kilometres. Velocity zero point five
one C.
(An arrow-head shaped ship has arrived.)
SPOCK: Lieutenant Uhura, signal Red Alert.
UHURA: Aye, sir. Red Alert. All decks, go to Red Alert.
SULU: They've stopped dead, sir. Range ninety thousand kilometres and
holding.
UHURA: Mister Spock? I'm receiving a visual signal.
SPOCK: Transfer to main viewer.
UHURA: Aye, sir.
(A strange, garish orange figure with triangular eyes (possibly)
appears against a blue and pink tie-die background.)
LOSKENE [on viewscreen]: I am Commander Loskene. You are trespassing in
a territorial annex of the Tholian Assembly. You must leave this area
immediately.
SPOCK: Spock, in command of the Federation star ship Enterprise.
Commander, according to the Federation, this area is free space.
LOSKENE [on viewscreen]: We claim this territory and are prepared to
use force, if necessary, to protect our property.
SPOCK: We are not interested in your display of force. The Enterprise
is responding to a distress signal from one of our ships and is
currently engaged in rescue operations. Do you wish to assist us?
LOSKENE [on viewscreen]: I find no evidence of a disabled ship. My
instruments indicate ours are the only two vessels in this area.
SPOCK: The other ship is interspatially trapped. It should reappear in
one hour and fifty three minutes. We request you stand by until then.
LOSKENE [on viewscreen]: Very well, Enterprise. In the interest of
interstellar amity, we will wait precisely one hour and fifty
three minutes. But be correct. We do not tolerate deceit.
[Medical Lab]
(A bench full of bottles, and red stuff dribbling
through curvy pipes.)
MCCOY: If we could only find the proper filtering agent, we might be
able to solve this problem. Negative. It's the third failure.
(The lab assistant is starting to go like Chekov.)
MCCOY: Nurse, take this sample and run an analysis on it.
CHAPEL: Yes, Doctor.
[Bridge]
SPOCK: Bridge to transporter room.
[Transporter room]
SCOTT: Transporter room here.
SPOCK [OC]: Ready for interphase in twenty seconds.
[Medical Lab]
(Chapel turns to see the lab assistant about to
strike McCoy with a metal bar.)
CHAPEL: Doctor McCoy!
(The two men struggle, while Chapel prepares a hypo and knocks the
attacker out.)
MCCOY: Thank you, nurse. Call security. I want to have some checks run
on this man.
[Bridge]
SPOCK: Lock on to Captain Kirk's co-ordinates
[Transporter room]
SPOCK [OC]: And prepare to bring him aboard, Mister
Scott.
(The transporter activates, but nothing happens.)
SPOCK [OC]: Bring him aboard, Mister Scott.
SCOTT: I'm trying. Captain Kirk is not on his designated co-ordinates,
Mister Spock.
SPOCK [OC]: Well, keep trying, Mister Scott.
[Bridge]
SPOCK: Lieutenant Sulu, evaluation.
SULU: Sensor readings are not corresponding to those we received the
last time we saw the Defiant.
SPOCK: It's possible the Tholian entry into the area has disturbed the
space, and if that has occurred
MCCOY [OC]: McCoy to Bridge.
SPOCK: Spock here.
[Medical lab]
MCCOY: Has the Captain been beamed aboard yet?
SPOCK [OC]: Negative, Doctor.
MCCOY: When is that interphase going to happen?
[Bridge]
SPOCK: Theoretically it already has happened,
Doctor.
[Medical lab]
SPOCK [OC]: However, the ship's sensors are not
responding as predicted.
MCCOY: I thought you had the thing timed out.
[Bridge]
SPOCK: I did, Doctor. The space was disturbed by
the Tholians.
[Medical lab]
MCCOY: You mean you don't know whether you're going
to be able to recover the Captain or not?
SPOCK [OC]: Not at this interphase.
[Bridge]
SPOCK: I shall have to recalculate to determine
when the next interphase will occur. They do not take place at regular
intervals.
[Medical lab]
MCCOY: You can't wait for the next one. We've had
another case like Chekov.
[Bridge]
MCCOY [OC]: I had to confine my orderly to sickbay.
SPOCK: I have confidence that you will soon isolate the cause, Doctor,
and prevent further spread of the affliction.
[Medical lab]
MCCOY: The disease is not transmitted by the men,
Mister Spock. The cause is the area of space we're in. It's affecting
the whole crew.
[Bridge]
MCCOY [OC]: The molecular structure of the brain
tissues in the central nervous system are distorting.
[Medical lab]
MCCOY: And the madness that affected the Defiant's
crew will soon happen to the Enterprise.
[Bridge]
MCCOY [OC]: Now you've got to get this ship out of
here.
SULU: Mister Spock, we're being fired upon.
(The ship shakes to the impact of the blasts of energy.)
SPOCK: The renowned Tholian punctuality.
UHURA: Mister Spock, damage control report. Minor structural damage to
sections A4 and C13.
SPOCK: Engineering, hold power steady and cut off all unnecessary
expenditures. Mister Sulu, divert all but emergency maintenance power
to the shields.
SULU: But sir, that'll reduce our phaser power by fifty percent.
UHURA: Mister Spock!
(Another bolt of energy is heading towards them.)
[Engineering]
SCOTT: Scott to Bridge!
[Bridge]
SPOCK: Spock here.
SCOTT [OC]: I know you don't like to use the phasers, but you've got to
do something about that ship out there.
(McCoy enters.)
SPOCK: Understood. Lieutenant Uhura, open a channel to the Tholian
ship. Mister Sulu, lock in phaser tracking controls.
SULU: Phasers locked in, sir.
UHURA: There's no response on any frequency, sir.
MCCOY: What's the use of this battle, Spock? You've lost Jim. Take this
ship out of here.
SPOCK: Ready, Mister Sulu?
SULU: Ready, Mister Spock.
SPOCK: Fire.
SULU: A hit, Mister Spock.
SPOCK: Engineering, status report. Mister Scott?
SCOTT [OC]: Spock, that hit from the Tholians has fused our power
supply converters.
[Engineering]
SCOTT: I can't do a thing with the Enterprise now.
[Bridge]
SCOTT [OC]: She's bound to drift, maybe right
through that doorway out there.
SPOCK: Can you estimate minimum time required for repair?
[Engineering]
SCOTT: I don't even know if she can be repaired.
[Bridge]
MCCOY: Are you satisfied? Spock, why did you do it?
SPOCK: The decision to fight was logical. Lack of time prevented any
other course of action. The Tholian ship had to be disabled.
MCCOY: You should've known what could've happened and done everything
in your power to safeguard your crew. That is the mark of a starship
Captain, like Jim.
SPOCK: Doctor, I hardly believe this is the time for comparisons.
Please go to your laboratory and search for an antidote to the effects
of this space. That is your primary task, since we must remain here.
(McCoy leaves.)
SULU: Mister Spock, something has just entered sensor range. It's
another Tholian, sir. Loskene must've contacted them when he tried to
intercept us.
SPOCK: Fascinating.
SULU: Shall I lock in remaining phaser power, sir?
SPOCK: Negative. Lieutenant Uhura, can you open a channel to the
approaching vessel?
UHURA: They're refusing reception. I can't
SPOCK: Distance, Mister Sulu.
SULU: Just beyond phaser range, sir.
UHURA: What is that?
(The two Tholian ships have joined stern to stern, and are now moving
apart, drawing a thread of some sort out between them. Then they come
back across the viewscreen creating two more lines.)
SPOCK: Mister Sulu, I shall run an analysis on those filaments. Tie in
all sensors to the ship's library computer console.
Switch scanners.
SULU: Yes, sir.
(Five horizontal lines on the viewscreen.)
SPOCK: There's no analogy to this structure in Federation technology.
It is, however, an energy field, and if the Tholians are successful in
completing this structure before we have completed our repairs, we
shall not see home again.
(Now the Tholians are adding diagonal lines to the web.)
[Assembly room]
(Spock stands on a raised platform, behind a
lectern. Crew and officers are filing in.)
SPOCK: Doctor, your last report on an antidote on the effects of this
space was negative.
MCCOY: It's still negative, Mister Spock. Theragen is the most
promising substance tested so far. We're progressing.
SPOCK: The urgency requires your personal attention in the laboratory.
MCCOY: My staff is working around the clock. My being there will not
affect the biochemistry of any of the tests. This service requires my
personal attention, Mister Spock.
(He sits next to Scott.)
SPOCK: A few hours ago, the Captain elected to remain on board the
Defiant so that three members of this crew would have the best chance
of returning safely to the Enterprise. His concern was not only for
them, but for all the members of the crew of this ship. You all know
the sequence of events. We were fired upon by the Tholian ship. At that
time, Captain Kirk may have been alive. I deemed it necessary to return
the Tholian fire for the safety of the Enterprise. The Tholian ship has
been disabled. But as a result of the battle, we must accept the fact
that Captain Kirk is no longer alive.
(A crewman goes berserk and is carried out by three security men.)
MCCOY: Take him to Sickbay. Put him in restraint.
SPOCK: I shall not attempt to voice the quality of respect and
admiration which Captain Kirk commanded. Each of you must evaluate the
loss in the privacy of your own thoughts.
SCOTT: Attention. (a respectful pause) Dismissed.
(Everyone starts to file out.)
MCCOY: There is a duty to be performed in the Captain's quarters, which
requires our presence.
SPOCK: It can wait, Doctor. My duties require my immediate presence on
the bridge.
MCCOY: The Captain left a message tape. It was his order that it be
reviewed by both of us, should he ever be declared dead. You have just
declared Jim dead.
SPOCK: It will wait for a more suitable moment, Doctor.
MCCOY: Why? Are you afraid it'll change your present status?
SPOCK: The mental and physical state of this crew are your
responsibility, Doctor. At the moment, they are your top priority.
MCCOY: The Captain's last order is top priority, and you will honour
that order before you take over.
[Kirk's quarters]
MCCOY: (looking at a medal) He was a hero in every
sense of the word, yet his life was sacrificed for nothing. The one
thing that would have given his death meaning is the safety of the
Enterprise. Now you've made that impossible, Mister Spock.
SPOCK: We came here for a specific purpose, Doctor.
MCCOY: Maybe not the same one. I really came here to find out why you
stayed and fought.
SPOCK: The Captain would have remained to recover a crew member at the
risk of his own life or even his own ship.
MCCOY: Yes, he would, Mister Spock, but you didn't have that decision
to make. What would you gain by fighting the Tholians? You could have
assured yourself of a captaincy by leaving the area. But you chose to
stay. Why?
SPOCK: I need not explain my rationale to you or any other member of
this crew. There is a margin of variation in any experiment. While
there was a chance, I was bound legally and morally to ascertain the
Captain's status.
MCCOY: You mean to be sure if he was dead. Well, you made certain of
that.
SPOCK: That is enough, Doctor. We both have other things to do.
MCCOY: Yes, I have something to do. If this crew is to survive, I have
to find an antidote to this space you've locked us into.
SPOCK: You will return to your duty as soon as we've discharged our
responsibilities here.
MCCOY: There's no hurry, Mister Spock. The antidote probably doesn't
concern you. Vulcans are probably immune, so just take your time.
(Spock enters the combination to the Captain's safe.)
MCCOY: I must admit I don't understand you, Spock, but I just can't
believe that you would want Jim's command.
You must know that if you get us out of this situation, they'll pin a
medal on your chest and give you command of the Enterprise.
SPOCK: Doctor, I am in command of the Enterprise.
MCCOY: I would like to remedy that situation.
SPOCK: If you believe I have acted irregularly, then relieve me of
duty. That is your prerogative as medical officer of this ship.
KIRK [on monitor]: Bones, Spock. since you are playing this tape, we
will assume that I am dead, that the tactical situation is critical,
and both of you are locked in mortal combat. It means, Spock, that you
have control of the ship and are probably making the most difficult
decisions of your career. I can offer only one small piece of advice,
for whatever it's worth. Use every scrap of knowledge and logic you
have to save the ship. But temper your judgment with intuitive insight.
I believe you have those qualities, but if you can't find them in
yourself, seek out McCoy. Ask his advice. And if you find it sound,
take it. Bones, you've heard what I've just told Spock. Help him if you
can. But remember he is the Captain. His decisions must be followed
without question. You might find that he is capable of human insight
and human error. They are most difficult to defend, but you will find
that he is deserving of the same loyalty and confidence each of you
have given me. Take care.
MCCOY: Spock, I, er, I'm sorry. It does hurt, doesn't it?
SPOCK: What would you have me say, Doctor?
(The intercom whistles.)
SPOCK: Spock here.
SCOTT [OC]: Mister Spock, we have a readout on the Tholian tractor
field. I think we can estimate its approximate completion time.
SPOCK: I shall be there shortly. Doctor, I believe we each have our
respective tasks to complete before the Tholians complete theirs.
[Uhura's quarters]
(Uhura is obviously off-duty as she has changed out
of her uniform. She is just putting on a necklace when she is hit by
searing pain in her body. Then she catches sight of a ghostly image in
the mirror.)
UHURA: Captain! Captain Kirk, we thought you were
(But the image fades away. She dashes out.)
[Corridor]
UHURA: Spock! Mister. Oh, Doctor I've just seen the
Captain.
MCCOY: Of course you have, Uhura. We would all like to
UHURA: He's alive. He's alive, Doctor.
MCCOY: Of course.
UHURA: Believe me, I did see him. I did. Spock! Mister Spock!
MCCOY: We're going to Sickbay.
UHURA: Doctor. Doctor, I'm not going mad. I did see Captain Kirk. I've
got to get to Mister Spock.
(She faints in his arms.)
[Engineering]
(An engineer succumbs to space-madness and attacks
Scott. Two others haul him off.)
SCOTT: Scott to Captain.
[Bridge]
SCOTT [OC]: Scott to Captain.
SPOCK: Spock here. Proceed, Mister Scott.
[Engineering]
SCOTT: One of our crewmen just went berserk, but we
have him under control for the moment.
[Bridge]
SPOCK: Report to Doctor McCoy all symptoms noted
prior to the attack.
[Engineering]
SPOCK [OC]: Spock out.
[Medical lab]
(We can hear Chekov's cries as he struggles against
the restraints in Sickbay.)
CHAPEL: Doctor McCoy,
MCCOY: Yes, Nurse.
CHAPEL: I have the diagnosis of the crewman who attacked engineer
Scott. It was definitely due to the deteriorative effects of
interspace.
MCCOY: Yes, it's beginning to spread generally throughout the ship.
CHAPEL: Are we any closer, Doctor?
MCCOY: No, except I'm positive that it's a theragen derivative that's
the answer. And it better be the next one.
(The web is getting close to completion all around the Enterprise.)
[Sickbay]
(Whilst Chekov writhes against invisible foes,
Uhura lies quietly on the bed.)
UHURA: Mister Spock didn't believe me either, did he, Doctor?
MCCOY: Well, nobody saw him but you, Uhura.
UHURA: Then I didn't really see him, did I?
MCCOY: I don't think so.
UHURA: Will I become like Chekov, Doctor?
MCCOY: No, no. We're working hard. We'll find an antidote.
[Engineering]
(O'Neil has a dizzy spell.)
SCOTT: We're beginning to interphase.
O'NEIL: I'm all right.
SCOTT: Scott to Bridge.
SPOCK [OC]: Bridge. Spock here.
SCOTT: Are we slipping into interspace?
[Bridge]
SPOCK: Negative. We are relatively stable at the
moment.
[Engineering]
SPOCK [OC]: Why do you ask?
(Scott sees a ghostly image floating by the ladders to the upper level.
It's Kirk.)
SCOTT: I don't believe it.
(Then it is gone.)
SPOCK [OC]: What is it, Mister Scott?
[Bridge]
(McCoy enters.)
SPOCK: Mister Scott?
SCOTT [OC]: Mister Spock.
[Engineering]
SCOTT: I've just seen Captain Kirk. He was standing
there as plain as we are.
[Bridge]
SCOTT [OC]: And then he just disappeared.
SPOCK: Report to the bridge immediately.
MCCOY: Sounds like a horror story. Suppose there's any truth in it?
SPOCK: In critical moments, men sometimes see exactly what they wish to
see.
MCCOY: Do you suppose they're seeing Jim because they've lost
confidence in you?
SPOCK: I was merely stating a fact, Doctor.
MCCOY: It's getting critical. There have been a number of assaults down
on the lower decks. Even Scotty's being affected. If Scotty goes under,
that's the finish of whatever chance we have of getting the Enterprise
out of here.
SPOCK: Please leave that to me, Doctor McCoy. I realise that the crew
are your prime concern. You can best serve them in your laboratory. I
urge you to confine yourself to it until a remedy has been found.
MCCOY: Spock! It must be this space. It's getting to me too. I know
it's nothing you've done, Spock. I, I'm sorry.
SPOCK: I understand, Doctor. I'm sure the Captain would simply have
said forget it, Bones.
(McCoy collapses as Scott enters.)
SCOTT: Mister Spock, look!
(The image of Kirk is there, apparently calling out to them.)
SPOCK: Captain? Captain? Captain.
(The image disappears.)
[Sickbay]
(McCoy releases the straps on Uhura's bed.)
UHURA: Am I all right, Doctor?
MCCOY: Yes, Uhura, you're fine.
UHURA: Then what I saw
MCCOY: It was real.
UHURA: Captain Kirk's alive?
MCCOY: We all saw him. The Captain's still alive.
CHAPEL [OC]: Nurse Chapel to Doctor McCoy.
MCCOY: McCoy here.
CHAPEL: Results of the last theragen test are ready for you, Doctor.
MCCOY: I'll be right there.
[Spock's quarters]
SCOTT: Then your fears about that phaser were
correct. It blasted a hole right through that crazy space fabric, and
only heaven knows where it sent the Defiant.
SPOCK: Exactly. But the Captain remained. Only the overlap time
changed. The next interphase will occur here.
(A diagram on a desk monitor.)
SPOCK: Can you be ready?
SCOTT: That'll be about twenty minutes. Aye,
she'll be back together. But we'll only have about eighty percent power
built up.
SPOCK: It will have to do, Mister Scott. (door buzzer) Come.
(McCoy enters carrying a tray with a flask of orange liquid and three
shot glasses.)
SCOTT: What have you got there?
MCCOY: Compliments of the house. To your good health and the health of
the crew.
SPOCK: You've found the antidote, Doctor.
MCCOY: Yes, and I've ordered it orally or intravenously for everyone
aboard the ship. I would like for you gentlemen to drink it down.
SPOCK: Ensign Chekov was affected so early. Has he responded to it?
MCCOY: He's his smiling self again. I've discharged him from Sickbay.
SCOTT: What is it?
MCCOY: It's a diluted theragen derivative.
SPOCK: Theragen? A nerve gas used by the Klingons.
SCOTT: Aye. And deadly, too. What are you thinking of, Doc? Are you
trying to kill us all?
SPOCK: If I remember correctly, it caused fatality only when used in
pure form.
MCCOY: That's right, and in this derivative, mixed with alcohol, it
merely deadens certain nerve inputs to the brain.
SCOTT: Oh, well, any decent brand of Scotch will do that.
MCCOY: One good slug of this, and you can hit a man with phaser stun,
and he'd never feel it or even know it.
SCOTT: Does it make a good mix with Scotch?
MCCOY: It should.
SCOTT: I'll let you know. (leaves with the remaining contents of the
flask)
MCCOY: Well, drink it down, Spock. It's the human thing to do. That's a
medical order, Captain.
[Bridge]
SPOCK: Welcome back, Lieutenant.
UHURA: Thank you, sir.
SPOCK: Your absence was keenly felt, Mister Chekov.
CHEKOV: Thank you, Mister Spock.
SPOCK: Estimated time for completion of the Tholian web.
CHEKOV: Two minutes, sir.
SPOCK: Are the ships computers programmed for entry into interspace?
CHEKOV: Yes, sir. The ship can drive into interspace at any time.
SPOCK: Spock to engineering.
[Engineering]
SCOTT: Scott here.
SPOCK [OC]: Prepare for interphase in
[Bridge]
SPOCK: Fifteen seconds.
SCOTT [OC]: Aye, sir. Standing by.
SULU: Mister Spock, they're closing the web.
CHEKOV: Interphase in ten seconds. Nine, eight
[Transporter room]
(Chapel and McCoy enter.)
CHEKOV [OC]: Seven, six, five
[Bridge]
SPOCK: Stand by with full power.
[Engineering]
CHEKOV [OC]: Four, three
SCOTT: She's only up to seventy six percent.
[Bridge]
SPOCK: It will have to do.
CHEKOV: One.
SPOCK: Ready to transport on my order.
(Kirk appears on the viewscreen.)
UHURA: I see him.
CHEKOV: There he is!
SULU: It's the Captain. Sir, the tractor field is activating.
CHEKOV: We're being pulled out of here.
SPOCK: Try to maintain position Mister Sulu.
SULU: I can't, sir.
SPOCK: Engineering, bring ship's power up to full capability.
(There's a massive jolt, then the Enterprise disappears from inside the
web and reappears in open space.)
UHURA: Where are we now, Mister Spock?
CHEKOV: Captain, we have destroyed the Tholians' web.
SPOCK: Negative, Ensign. Utilising ship's power has thrown us clear of
it. Compute the distance from the original location.
CHEKOV: At once, sir.
UHURA: Have we lost the Captain?
SPOCK: We shall soon see, Lieutenant.
CHEKOV: The ship has been thrown exactly two point seven two parsecs
distant from our previous position.
SPOCK: Good. Since the Captain was locked into our transporter beam
when we were thrown clear of the interphase area, he should've been
drawn here with us. Spock to transporter room.
[Transporter room]
MCCOY: McCoy here.
SPOCK [OC]: The Captain's oxygen supply is running out now. Are you
standing by with a hypo of tri-ox compound for him?
MCCOY: I'm ready, Mister Spock.
[Bridge]
SPOCK: Prepare to transport on the Captain's
co-ordinates on my order.
O'NEIL [OC]: Ready, Mister Spock.
(Kirk appears on the viewscreen again.)
CHEKOV: Mister Spock, it's him! It's the Captain!
SPOCK: I see him, Ensign. I see him. Now, Doctor.
[Transporter room]
(It takes a couple of attempts, but Kirk is beamed
safely aboard and promptly falls to his knees. McCoy injects him while
Chapel removes his helmet.)
KIRK: Bones.
MCCOY: Welcome home, Jim.
[Bridge]
KIRK: I had a whole universe to myself after the
Defiant was thrown out. There was absolutely no one else in it. I must
say I prefer a crowded universe much better. How did you two get along
without me?
MCCOY: Oh, we managed. Mister Spock gave the orders, and I found the
answers.
KIRK: Good. No problems between you?
SPOCK: None worth reporting, Captain.
KIRK: Try me.
SPOCK: Only such minor disturbances as are inevitable when humans are
involved.
KIRK: Which humans, Mister Spock?
MCCOY: He means when humans become involved with Vulcans, Jim.
KIRK: Ah, yes. I understand. Well, I hope my last orders were helpful
in solving any problems that you don't feel worth reporting.
SPOCK: Orders, Captain?
MCCOY: What orders are you referring to, Jim?
KIRK: My last orders. The last orders that I left for both of you. The
last taped orders.
MCCOY: Oh, those orders. Well, there wasn't time. We never had a chance
to listen to them.
SPOCK: No. You see, the crisis was upon us, and then passed so quickly,
Captain, that we
KIRK: Good. Good. Well, I hope we won't have similar opportunities to
test those orders which you never heard. Ahead warp factor two, Mister
Sulu.
SULU: Warp factor two, sir.
